The modern model maker uses many different materials to create the products they are requested to design and produce. There are many jobs now that need a model making team of modelmakers. Below are some of the areas, scale models, can be required for. All of which we can deliver.

A/ Collectors gifts (collectables) These tend to be small self contained sculpts such as figurines, animals, little castles and dragons as an example or two, which can be stylised or realistic. These are normally made by a sculptural model maker. The master model can be made of many materials, such as clay, wax and resin. Most model makers choose the materials he or she most prefers to work in, but we can accommodate client requirements.

B/ Toys – helping our children to understand the spaces and form that create our environment. These are created by design first, then the model making starts. There are often many different types of model makers involved, Technical model makers, sculptural model makers, prototype model makers and al to get the desired product.

C/ Dioramas – often used to display the vehicle and solider models people collect. These are made by both technical model makers and sculptural model makers. Some times the models need to be made with a blending of the 2 skills to get the desired effect.

D/ Museum Display models – Are used in an almost endless list of applications to demonstrate processes, environments, historical buildings that no longer survive, and

interiors showing living space, and the environment of our ancestors.

In short we can provide all the services to design and build a display or exhibition, including the model making team, technicians, designers, and trade specialists required to deliver the project. The main areas of model making that are involved in is this type of work are, architectural model making, technical modelling, sculptural modelling and general model making.

E/ Exhibition models - Showing cut away models to sell new building materials. Or as a display of a new development of flats, to show what they look like before they are built.

The diversity of methods used in this category is similar to the Museum display models, both categories are trying to get messages across to the public. They can also show the workings of machines or new products where prototype modelling can be applied, along with technical modelling and sculptural modelling, for example for a medical display of a body showing the various organs.

F/ War games – Need buildings and terrain to embellish the landscape that battles are fought on. These can be scratch built and commercially produced models. The technical models used in the games can be simple or exquisitely detailed some of the commercial models show this detail. The commercial figures available (used in the playing of the games) are prototyped by the sculptural model maker, who is skilled in the detail and expression for the faces and form of the model. These are normally made 3 times larger and then reduced in size in production, to enhance the detail quality.

G/ Railway models. These are produced at many levels, but the main area that concerns us as model makers is the commercially produced white metal, or injection moulded kits or fully assembled models that are sold in the high street shops. Skilled technical model makers are used to produce a perfect scale replica. Prototype modelling of this sort is used to create the first model from which the tools are made then production can start. Some of these master models are being made a from CAD drawings that are then out put by stereo lithography or CNC milling. This 3D modelling is at the for front of how the industry is progressing. These are the forms of model making that the Locomotive models are created. The scenery is made in part by sculpting and in part by technical modelling. For example a tunnel entrance would be milled out of resin, where the banks surrounding it would be sculpted.

H/ Film and Theatre Models – A lot of these can be made at full size, essentially creating a reality that is in the imagination of the producer or director. For example, a statue of a mythical figure 10 metres tall could be made in polystyrene but be made to look like stone, enabling it to be moved easily on the film set. Our team create these sculptural models by using our team of sculptural model makers.

When there is a need to produce a monster on screen, it can often start its life as a relatively small model that is scanned taken into the computer world of film making. There it is refined and enhanced and animated into the film. But it was born out of the model makers hands.

I/ Architectural Models, 3D modelling to give a vision of a development or building for display, exhibition or planning. Architectural Model Making is the same as technical modelling, in a specialised area. Architectural models can be made of many materials the modern model is usually made from plastic, laser cut and fabricated into the forms that make the modern building. These are then decorated by the skilled architectural model maker. Each area of ground has to be masked and painted in different colours to create the effect of the many materials are used around the building, grass, brick paving, stone and concrete etc.

Architectural Models can be seen in many of the large developments that are spring up round our cities. Architectural modelling helps sell the buildings and allows the customers visualise the finished building before it’s been started.

The joy of the architectural model maker is in the detail, making the buildings look real. Their skill often allows the developer to photograph the model Photoshop a sky in to include into the brochure making the illusion real for the consumer.

J/ Prototype Model Making. This is the second stage in the design process. Once the drawings are done the prototype model maker starts his job, to make the product come to life. Product prototype models are the second step in making a product real, proving that all the surfaces look right, ensuring the mechanics operate correctly. Prototype modelling allows us to see the form, feel it, change it and adapt it, until it works perfectly as a product. Prototype model makers create our reality for the product we use, before all the expensive tooling has to be made.

K/ Marine Model Making. These models are the shipyards marketing tool to show their customers the quality products they make. Marine modelling shows the form and function of the ships and boats that populate our seas and waterways. The Marine model maker by his or her technical skills piece by piece assembles a craft almost as complicated as the real vessel, showing all the exquisite detail the craft has to offer. This has long been a marine tradition to give a model when a vessel is constructed. Ship model makers have come from a long line of craftsmen and women that have been making these models for hundreds of years.

The above represents a broad guide to type of models we can construct and supply. Some of our team have been with us for nearly 25 years and between them all as a company we have hundreds of year experience in making models. We hope that the future will bring our customers many years of success, and we will be able to aid that process.
